Leisy Vidal is our show-stoppin’, double trouble web designer AND developer! She’s up for any challenge and her smile always brightens up the dev floor.

Favorite Orlando Adventure Spot:
I’m in the middle of getting my master’s degree from Harvard. Right now, adventure for me is studying for hours in a coffee shop around town creating custom node modules, learning the MEAN stack and creating entire React component libraries over the weekend. Getting my master’s from Harvard has been, for me, the biggest life adventure. It’s been a long, hard road that has been years in the making with lots of sacrifices and late nights, but still the biggest challenge and reward for me personally. Once I’m finished, I’m definitely looking forward to some adventurous traveling.

Do You Have Any Hidden Talents?
My hands are double jointed, I really love yoga and can do most of the poses, and I can’t sing to save my life, but I love to rap in the privacy of my own home (especially when Biggie, Lupe Fiasco, or Fugees come on my Spotify playlists).

If You Could Close Your Eyes and Be Anywhere on Earth When They Opened, Where Would You Be?
I would love to visit Greece.

If You Could Be on Any TV Show, Which Would You Choose?
Jeopardy. I’m super nerdy and DVR every episode to binge watch as soon as I get the chance. I love yelling answers at Alex Trebek from the comfort of my own home.

Have You Ever Met Anyone Famous?
I met Ken Jennings, the Jeopardy player with the all-time highest game earnings on the show. I definitely had a fangirl moment.

What’s One Piece of Life Advice You’d Give?
For upcoming designers, I would definitely advise getting involved in local community meetups. That’s very important to me because I’m a huge believer that one person cannot possibly know everything—but that together, we can make great things happen.

If you haven’t gotten a chance yet, make sure to check out Dribbble Orlando, WordPress Orlando, or AIGA Orlando. Orlando is just full of designers who are not only amazing at their craft, but also great people. Everyone is always willing to share their knowledge and help each other out so that our community gets the best caliber of work it possibly can.

Describe Your Typical Day at DZ:
My days at DZ are never typical. One day I could be in design mode, designing user interfaces, low-fidelity wireframes, high-fidelity mockups or interactive prototypes. Another day I could be in development mode, working with HTML, SCSS, PHP or JavaScript. In between, I try to sharpen my marketing skills with Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and Google Optimize. And when I’m not doing any of the above, I’m photographing daily DZ life for our social media accounts. That’s what I love the most about DZ—I can flex my creative assets toward any department I’d like, which consequently and consistently pushes my growth as a creative.

We Have to Ask… Design or Dev?
Dev-sign? Can I say that?

There’s definitely a Jekyll and Hyde situation going on for me at the office. Design Leisy usually has her feet kicked up, music blasting, munching on a few snacks and cracking jokes. I absolutely love design. I can sit for hours, even days working out every minuscule detail of a user interface and honestly enjoy every second of it.

Development Leisy is heads down, typing away and yelling at PHP errors. I absolutely love the adrenaline rush of problem-solving some complex display of data, flexboxing and nesting SCSS, or creating arrays of ACF fields until I can make my design function as well as it looks.

In all honesty, it doesn’t matter how beautiful an interface looks if it doesn’t function well. It also doesn’t matter how well an interface functions if the interface isn’t marketable or intuitive enough for its users. So my final answer is that I choose… dev-sign. #jekyllandhide #devanddesign
